Ghana is popular among travelers for its diverse wildlife, thick forests, secluded beaches, and old forts. Volunteers working in Tamale usually explore the city of Tamale and visit the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, Mole National Park, Larabanga Mosque etc. Volunteers working in Accra spend time in Accra and explore the city or can also head out to Cape Coast to relax on the beautiful beaches. You can also go for the local market visit with your hosts, over the weekend, in case you wish to take a closer look at the community and how it functions. You can also prepare your own travel bucket list and share it with us - we shall help you with planning!
Explore the Mole National Park - Located in Northern Ghana, this is the country's largest national park and it totally deserves a visit as you'll find the widest range of wildlife here. Because of the lack of predators, safaris can be done on foot – a unique experience that is quite different from the vehicle safaris in southern and eastern Africa. To actually walk so close to elephants is an exhilarating experience you will not ever forget!
Visit the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary - Cool off in high pitched waterfalls and enjoy the freshness of nature while exploring the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary. As the name suggests, you'll get to spot several primates in the wilderness, but not just that - you'll get to soak in the beauty of nature, seeking a much-needed break during the weekends.
Visit the Larabanga Mosque - The largest and of the oldest mosque in Ghana, the Larabanga Mosque is also known as the "Mecca of West Africa". In case you are heading off to Mole National Park during the weekend, you must visit the mosque as well which is located just about 4 kilometers south of the Mole National Park entrance.
Visit Kokum National Park - This is a beautiful and unique wildlife reserve located in the Western Region of Ghana. Situated near the town of Elmina, the park is approximately a 30-minute drive from the historic Cape Coast, which is known for its cultural and colonial significance. Kokum National Park is one of Ghana's premier national parks and is renowned for its stunning tropical rainforest, diverse wildlife, and the Canopy Walkway, a popular tourist attraction.
If you have anything else in your bucket list or planning to go & explore any of the above-mentioned places, you can simply get in touch with our Travel Experts, who can guide you better in planning your weekend tours. Drop us a mail at traveldesk@volunteeringsolutions.com mentioning your choice of weekend adventures, and we shall cater your needs.
A Ghana volunteer experience is a truly unforgettable way to explore the rich and diverse local culture as well as travelling with a difference. Whether volunteering abroad for the first time or as a returning VolSol alumnus, we can help kickstart your volunteering journey in Ghana today! If you’re looking to make a lasting impact on our volunteer programs in Ghana and truly become a global citizen, our teams are ready for you to get in touch and help find the perfect volunteering opportunity for you.
The ‘how’ in how to volunteer abroad in Ghana is a pretty simple process that our team can guide you through. The hard part is choosing a program that you want to get involved in! Our Ghana volunteer programs offer a breadth of opportunities to work with those in need of the support and contributions you can offer. We have two different locations, Accra, Axim, and Tamale.
If you’re hoping to volunteer in Ghana with children, we certainly have the projects for you! Our Street Children Program is a wonderful opportunity to volunteer in Africa and help those in need of it. You’ll be working with children from as young as 6 months old, up to 12 years old, allowing you to see a range of stages in child development and learn how best to care for these children. A fantastic opportunity for those looking to work with children in the future! You’ll give them a basic education and the skills they need to keep themselves off the streets, as well as assisting the local ‘Mamas’ in their daily chores.
If you’re interested in teaching, our Kindergarten and Pre-School Volunteer Program would be great for you! You will work with children under the age of 5, and at this very tender age, getting the basics of schooling correct is key to their future success. You would be helping to pave the way for their future achievements by teaching them the basics. Development in all areas of their life is crucial, and you can be part of it.
Volunteer travel in Ghana doesn’t get more unique than our Physiotherapy Internship in Accra. You will be working at a holistic therapy centre, focussing on muscle building and improving motor skills. You will help rehabilitate patients after nerve damage or sports injuries, as well as carrying out massages and relaxation exercises with children.
The Ghana volunteer programs don’t end there! Our Medical Internship in Accra is another unrivalled opportunity to volunteer in Ghana and make a difference to the local communities there. This program is open to volunteers with varied experience, but on the path to becoming a qualified professional. You’ll be assisting the local team in their daily duties, such as weighing patients, checking temperatures, cleaning wounds, as well as doing administrative work. All very valuable experiences in a new medical and cultural context!
We also have volunteer organisations in Tamale, Ghana, which offer a different way of life in comparison to the busy capital of Accra. Still a large city, it has many opportunities for you to get involved in! For our budding sportspeople, our Sports Volunteering in Ghana would be the perfect program! You will be coaching local kids in football and nurturing their passion for sport as well as fomenting their team building and leadership skills.
Alongside the Sports Volunteering project, you can also join our Community Development project! You will work across all sectors of improving local life, a truly all-encompassing project! You’ll be able to teach local children, assist in construction and renovation, and work in providing clean water for their community!
Were you hoping to volunteer in Ghana as a teacher? Tamale has just the project for you! Our Girls’ Education project facilitates the education of girls who would otherwise not be a part of mainstream education. You will assist teachers in delivering lessons and work with small groups of students. You can also work behind the scenes in providing a scheme of work and lesson plans! You would be giving these girls the tools to improve their future for them and their families.
Our budding medics and nurses can also join our Medical Volunteer project and assist the community in maintaining a healthy population. Qualified professionals will of course have more freedom in what they can do, and assist in the treatment of patients. Students will be able to shadow, observe, and also take part in some of the daily routines of the hospital! Your skills will be well put to use.
Finding it hard to make a decision and don’t know which one to pick? We’ve got you covered! Our 2-Week special in Tamale will give you the chance to work with local communities in different capacities, whilst also organising your weekend trips for you! All you have to do is show up with a smile and get stuck in!
For our marine and ecological conservationists, Axim is the place for you. Ghana’s Gold Coast will be the perfect backdrop for your volunteering experience. You will engage actively in environmental protection and nature conservation, recycling protection of the natural habitat of humans and animals. You will document the different species found there, clean up beaches, plant trees to prevent coastal erosion, and protect and care for the sea turtle population.

We have in-country coordinators and representatives to assist you at the project sites.
Additionally, Volunteering Solutions offers various support services, including:
Upon completing your project, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion, which will significantly enhance your career prospects. This experience will boost your CV/resume and expand your social network. It’s a journey you’ll cherish forever.
Volunteering Solutions also provides tailor-made projects for group volunteering (students, colleagues, or families) where people can work together and explore Ghana most uniquely.
Ghana’s vast landscape and natural beauty provide the backdrop for your volunteer experience. Located on Africa’s Gold Coast, beach days could feature heavily in your volunteer schedule!
Our volunteer opportunities in Ghana on the beach are in Accra and Axim, the coastal capital and another city further west. Here you can visit the Kwame Nkrumah memorial park and learn more about the country’s history pre- and post-colonisation.
In Axim you’ll find idyllic coastlines, overseen by forts from a time gone by, and swaying coconut palms wherever you look - truly heaven on earth. People here work in the gold trade and agriculture, with the Kundum festival being one of the most important dates in the calendar!
Another one of our places to volunteer in Ghana is Tamale, further north and in the centre of the country, away from the coast. It is Ghana's third largest city, and its location gives it a very different feel to the previous two locations. If you prefer a dry savanna climate, with more options for safaris and exploration of local wildlife, Tamale would be just the place for you!
If you are hoping to volunteer in Ghana, we have many projects available to you! Here’s what we have on offer:

If you are working with children, it is also advisable to bring some donations to the project you will be joining. For example, colouring books, teaching materials, toys, stationery etc. You can also buy these locally to help support local vendors and small businesses.
Ghana is beautiful all year-round, and as an equatorial country it only has two seasons, dry and wet! The dry season runs between October to March, and is far less humid than the wet season! Temperatures don’t fluctuate majorly between wet and dry, but the rains and humidity take centre stage during April to September!
December is a fantastic time to visit, with Afrochella taking centre stage on the music scene. This time of year is also perfect for going to see the local wildlife, as the weather is dry and dusty, and many road tracks are still accessible.
We welcome volunteers from all over the world and different walks of life! We firmly believe that diversity and inclusion can only make the world a better place. We want to champion global citizens with an international vision and a deep commitment to the betterment of our society. Our volunteers should be compassionate, enthusiastic about change, diligent, and open-minded.
Our projects cater to group volunteering in Ghana, as well as family volunteering groups, student volunteering, gap year travellers, as well as teenage travellers looking to expand their horizons.

Ghana is a rare place, untouched by mass tourism and still maintaining its character and culture! You can experience the modern Ghanaian way of living in the vibrant capital, Accra, or enjoy a slower, more relaxed pace of life in Tamale, as well as the abundance of beautiful wildlife around you!
Accra has all the caveats of modern living, as well as being positioned right next to the beach, where you can soak up the rays! If you’re volunteering in Tamale, on your doorstep you have Mole National Park on your doorstep, where you can go on safai=ri on foot! The lack of natural predators in the area makes the experience entirely unique to what you may be used to in Eastern Africa. Walking alongside elephants is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
Another option for exploring is the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary. Full of waterfalls to cool off under, you’ll be a guest among the many primate species present in Ghana! You’ll soak up the peace and tranquillity of being in nature, and enjoy a much needed rest.
If you’re interested to know more about the religion and culture of the local community, you can also visit the Larabanga Mosque. Lauded as ‘The Mecca of West Africa’, you can silently revere the largest and oldest mosque in Ghana! With so much to see, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
