Looking for a volunteer experience that blends hands-on conservation work with island life? Volunteering in Malaysia offers the chance to contribute to meaningful marine and wildlife conservation projects while living on the tropical island of Perhentian. With its crystal-clear waters, coral reefs and close-knit local communities, Malaysia is a unique place to make a real impact and experience an entirely different way of life.
Whether you're interested in marine research, protecting endangered species or contributing to sustainable tourism, this is a chance to do something unforgettable.
Volunteering Solutions offers a unique Marine and Conservation Volunteer Programme based on the Perhentian Islands. This is perfect for anyone passionate about environmental conservation, marine ecosystems or sustainability. You'll be directly involved in hands-on fieldwork that makes a difference.
Key activities may include:
Whether you’re a student of marine biology, a nature enthusiast or just keen to volunteer abroad, this programme offers real-world experience in a spectacular setting.
Your work as a volunteer supports ongoing conservation efforts led by local NGOs and researchers. These projects aim to restore coral reefs, protect endangered marine species and create sustainable solutions for the local fishing and tourism industries.
Volunteers also contribute to community education programmes, helping local residents and children learn about environmental responsibility.
The data you help collect feeds into larger global databases used by researchers and conservationists around the world, meaning your contribution has a lasting footprint.
After arriving in Kuala Lumpur, you'll make your way to the Perhentian Islands, where our local team will welcome you. Volunteers receive a full orientation and safety briefing before beginning their programme. Accommodation is in a shared beachfront volunteer house, just steps away from the water.
Your typical week will include a mix of training, snorkelling-based surveys, community activities and group projects. Weekends are free to explore the islands, go snorkelling or simply relax on the beach. Meals are provided Monday to Friday, with vegetarian options available.
Support is available 24/7 from the in-country team, and volunteers are encouraged to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.

Looking for volunteer work in Malaysia? Look no further than the ecologically diverse and stunning Borneo! Borneo, the third-largest island in the world, is a treasure trove of biodiversity and culture. Shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, it boasts some of the planet's oldest rainforests, home to unique wildlife like orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and the rare Bornean pygmy elephant.
The island is also rich in indigenous cultures, with various ethnic groups, each with their own languages, traditions, and customs. Places like the Kelabit Highlands and the longhouses of the Iban people offer glimpses into the vibrant heritage of Borneo.
Ecotourism is growing in popularity as visitors seek to explore its lush jungles, pristine beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. However, Borneo faces challenges like deforestation and habitat loss, prompting efforts to balance conservation with development. Whether trekking through the lush jungles of Sabah or diving in the crystal-clear waters of Sipadan, Borneo captivates with its natural beauty and cultural richness.
We have three different volunteering opportunities in Malaysia to pick from! All are fantastic opportunities to give back to the local community and see your work in action. Take a look here:
No matter which program you choose to be a part of, you’ll definitely have an enriching experience.

We know what volunteers look for regarding safety and security during their stay. All of our accommodation is located in safe areas, with 24/7 support from VolSol staff. You will be provided with a full orientation about the country, the city, and the local area to ensure you are as best informed as you can be!
Our pre-departure booklet provides comprehensive information about the do’s and don’ts of the area, and how best to respect the cultures and traditions of your destination of choice!
Borneo is a little off the beaten track, so items you have readily available at home may be harder to come across when volunteering there! Here’s some basics that we suggest taking along with you:
Like many equatorial locations, Borneo has a wet and a dry season. The dry season runs from March to October, and the rainy season is from November to February. This doesn’t mean that the dry season is completely without rain though! There will be rain, just not for such prolonged periods of time.
The dry season provides the perfect conditions for watching wildlife and volunteering in the rainforest, as orangutans, monkeys, and other animals are more active during this time!
We welcome volunteers from all over the world and different walks of life! We firmly believe that diversity and inclusion can only make the world a better place. We want to champion global citizens with an international vision and a deep commitment to the betterment of our society. Our volunteers should be compassionate, enthusiastic about change, diligent, and open-minded.
Our projects cater to group volunteering in Malaysia , as well as family volunteering groups, student volunteering, gap year travellers, as well as teenage travellers looking to expand their horizons.
